Kashan's reputation was built on silk in the sixteenth century and rebuilt on wool in the nineteenth, when merchant families revived the workshops with fine Manchester-spun yarns.

The classical Kashan formula — medallion, pendants, cornerpieces, and a field of scrolling vinery — is one of the most recognisable in Persian weaving. The best pieces temper that formality with unusually soft, lustrous wool.
