Kerman

Southeast Iran · painterly drawing, soft palette

Kerman's designers were draughtsmen first: pictorial trees, vases, and garden plans executed with a soft asymmetrical knot on cotton. The palette runs unusually wide — roses, soft greens, champagne golds — held together by disciplined drawing.

The carpets of Ravar (Lavar), north of the city, represent the tradition at its finest, and well-preserved examples now trade as collectible objects rather than furnishings.
